After settling in the three new arrivals with their complete packs of art materials we took an excursion into Nepal’s unique Kathmandu Durbar Square. Everybody took rubbings of the exquisite engravings of wood, stone and metal found everywhere in Nepal, as well as quick sketches and numerous photographs.

We took a rickshaw ride, with everybody riding in tandem, through the bustling streets of Kathmandu to arrive at the haven of peace and quiet and beauty...

After lunch we set up all the easels and everybody found a view point that they particularly liked and painted until the sun was low in the sky! A relaxing afternoon and an inspirational place.

Everybody had a chance to independently explore Patan Durbar Square and then we got down to sketching street models. Manoj, our guide, helped us find one volunteer after another to model for us, 10 minutes at a time. It was such a nice friendly atmosphere and everybody was so engrossed in their work they hardly noticed that passers by and even tourists had stopped to watch them and photograph them.

Some vibrant quick sketches were made and everyone felt very alive for the exercise!

After lunch the view of the Himalaya mountains from the hotel was stunning so we took advantage of it and set up easels and paints on the roof where we had the best view. Everybody set to work, all with different styles and uses of colour.

Great to have a reminder of where we are, nestled in the majesty of the mountains.
